    Mission

To develop, support, and advocate for high-quality dual language enriched education in New Mexico and beyond.

Desarrollar, apoyar y abogar por una educación de lenguaje dual de la más alta calidad en Nuevo México y más allá.

      Vision

New Mexico’s rich linguistic and cultural resources must be developed as assets. Four decades of research provide a road map for developing a multilingual, multicultural citizenry.  Providing an enriched multilingual education combined with high expectations has the greatest potential to close the achievement gap and prepare students for success in the 21st century (Collier & Thomas, 2009; Ramírez et al., 1991; Goldenberg, 2009). In addition to academic and career benefits, bilinguals possess increased cognitive flexibility and enriched problem-solving skills.

        Solidarity Statement

DLeNM stands in solidarity with all of our community, no matter the race, gender identity, sexual orientation, creed, or class. We believe that everyone deserves to be treated with compassion and dignity and ALL children deserve, and should receive, equitable access to high-quality education.

          Land Acknowledgement

DLeNM acknowledges the original peoples of New Mexico – Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache – who have protected and stewarded the land on which we live and the cultures and languages that have enriched our communities. In solidarity, we honor their right to Indigenous sovereignty, and we are dedicated to amplifying their voices while striving to be more attentive listeners, thoughtful learners, and collaborative partners. DLeNM is committed to supporting Indigenous communities in the validation and revitalization of their cultural and linguistic assets.

            Our Approach

DLeNM is an organization founded by teachers for teachers. We offer a variety of services and resources to support dual language learning and professional development for educators in new and veteran programs. We prioritize equity and community-centered voices. Family and community involvement are essential to our work, and we strive to build a future where all children have access to an inclusive, culturally responsive, high-quality dual language education.

            What Is Dual Language Learning?

Dual language learning is a model of education where instruction and learning occur in both English and a partner language, with the partner language being used for at least half of the instructional day. While the majority of dual language programs in the United States teach in English and Spanish, there are increasing numbers of programs across the country that include Indigenous and world languages.

Dual language programs typically begin in kindergarten or first grade and extend for at least five years. Many dual language programs continue into middle school and high school.

Dual language education fosters bilingualism, biliteracy, enhanced awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, and high levels of academic achievement in two languages. Research indicates that in addition to academic and career benefits, bilingual students enjoy increased cognitive flexibility and enriched problem-solving skills.
